Gift card scam red flags

Scammers reuse the same pressure tactics. If you notice any of these, stop and talk to someone you trust before buying cards.

• Payment demanded in gift cards only
• Extreme urgency — “today or you will be arrested”
• Asked to stay on the phone while you are at the store
• Told not to tell the cashier or your family
• Fake balance screenshots or “proof” in chat apps
• Cloned Telegram or WhatsApp usernames
• Discounted cards that require upfront “verification” fees
• “Recovery agents” who need more gift cards to return your money

Store employees are sometimes trained to spot these purchases — be honest if they ask why you are buying multiple high-value cards.
