Gift card scam red flags
Warning signs that appear again and again in real victim reports.
Scammers reuse the same pressure tactics. If you notice any of these, stop and talk to someone you trust before buying cards.
- Payment demanded in gift cards only
- Extreme urgency — “today or you will be arrested”
- Asked to stay on the phone while you are at the store
- Told not to tell the cashier or your family
- Fake balance screenshots or “proof” in chat apps
- Cloned Telegram or WhatsApp usernames
- Discounted cards that require upfront “verification” fees
- “Recovery agents” who need more gift cards to return your money
Store employees are sometimes trained to spot these purchases — be honest if they ask why you are buying multiple high-value cards.
